NEWS REPORT:

An American general has sounded a warning that should command Washington’s attention: the possibility of a Chinese military assault on Taiwan in 2027 remains a genuine threat, and U.S. forces in the Pacific are preparing accordingly.

Army Gen. Ronald P. Clark, commander of U.S. Army Pacific, recently reaffirmed that the so-called “Davidson window” remains valid. First raised in 2021, the assessment identified 2027 as a critical period when China could possess the military capabilities necessary to launch a major operation against Taiwan.

Clark has established April 2, 2027, as a readiness benchmark for American forces. He emphasized that this is not a predicted invasion date. Nevertheless, the message was unmistakable: America cannot afford to be caught unprepared.

But the timing raises an especially troubling question. What happens if America is already deeply committed to confronting Iran when China decides to make its move?

For years, Washington has feared fighting major conflicts in two regions simultaneously. Now that nightmare deserves serious consideration. And unlike previous wars fought thousands of miles from American shores, a confrontation with China could devastate the American economy even if the United States ultimately wins.

China Has Been Preparing For More Than An Invasion

China’s military preparations extend far beyond landing soldiers on Taiwan’s beaches. Beijing has spent decades developing the capabilities necessary to challenge American military dominance across the Pacific.

China now possesses the world’s largest navy by number of battle-force vessels, expanding its destroyers, submarines, amphibious assault ships and aircraft carriers. Its newest carrier, the Fujian, represents another technological leap toward challenging American naval superiority.

Meanwhile, Beijing has assembled an enormous missile arsenal designed to make American intervention extraordinarily dangerous. Anti-ship ballistic missiles such as the DF-21D and DF-26 threaten major warships, while American bases in Japan, Guam and elsewhere in the Pacific could face devastating missile strikes.

China may not need to defeat America’s entire Pacific Fleet. It may only need to inflict enough damage and delay reinforcements long enough to accomplish its objectives.

And Beijing has been rehearsing.

Chinese forces have repeatedly conducted large-scale exercises surrounding Taiwan, practicing maritime blockades, missile operations and coordinated air and naval attacks. China has expanded amphibious landing capabilities and explored mobilizing civilian ferries and commercial vessels to transport troops and equipment.

Beijing is also rapidly expanding its nuclear arsenal, constructing missile silos and developing additional delivery systems. A credible nuclear threat against the American homeland could make Washington hesitate before escalating a conventional conflict.

Then there is warfare in space.

American forces depend upon satellites for intelligence, navigation, communications and precision targeting. China has invested heavily in satellite jamming, cyber operations and weapons capable of threatening spacecraft.

Imagine American warships and aircraft suddenly struggling to communicate or locate targets during the opening hours of a Pacific war.

China is preparing to fight not merely for Taiwan, but against the entire American military system that would defend it.
