A ‘supersized’ El Niño looks set to wreak havoc globally with top officials warning of “disruption and devastation.”

The terrifying warning, made by top officials at both the United Nations and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), comes as forecasters predict this year’s weather event could be the biggest on record, as dramatic rises in ocean temperatures look likely to lead to a knock-on effect on weather systems in and around the Pacific Ocean.

El Niño is well known for its ability to cause powerful storms and sweltering temperature rises that can leading to both horrific floods and deadly droughts. And according to top forecasting officials at the WMO, things look likely to be worse than ever this year.

WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo warned that 2026’s El Niño, which is predicted to come into effect around November and last well into the New Year, has “the potential to deliver a massive blow to communities and economies across the world.”.

He continued: “We are already seeing disruption and devastation from droughts and floods and we expect these impacts to increase as El Niño intensifies”, adding that ““This exceptional El Niño demands exceptional preparation and response.”.
