NEWS REPORT:

US President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he does not expect the renewed conflict with Iran to continue for much longer, as he discussed the latest escalation with reporters in the Oval Office.

Asked how long the latest escalation was likely to continue, Trump replied, “Not too long”. He subsequently expressed a similar assessment of the broader conflict, saying Iran may have limited capacity to withstand continued US strikes.

“I don’t think it will be very much longer. I don’t know how much more they can take,” Trump said of Iran.

Trump also described the US strikes carried out against Iran the previous night, stating they destroyed newly constructed Iranian military equipment near the Strait of Hormuz.

“We hit them very hard last night. We took out all of the new equipment that they tried to build along the Strait of Hormuz, some defensive, some offensive. They were trying to see the ships because they can’t see the ships. They can’t see them because they have no radar, because we blew it up.”

He added that Washington could launch another attack if necessary.

“It was a very heavy attack last night, and we are prepared to do another one anytime we want,” he stressed.

Trump also rejected the idea that the approaching US midterm elections were influencing his decisions regarding Iran. He argued that Republican voters understand the importance of preventing Tehran from acquiring a nuclear weapon, even if the conflict temporarily drives up fuel prices.

“I’m not affected by the election. Number one, I’m not running. My party is running, and I’m going to help my party, but I think my party respects the fact that we are not allowing Iran to have a nuclear weapon.”

Earlier Wednesday, Trump sought to reassure Israel as fighting between Washington and Tehran resumed.

During a brief telephone interview with Israel’s Channel 12 News, Trump said, “Israel should not worry. You know why? Because I’m the President, and I will take care of Israel.”

The renewed confrontation comes as Israel’s defense establishment warns that the chances of another escalation involving Iran are increasing.
