AT least 250 people across Europe including a footballer have died as the continent battles a heatwave that has sparked blanket weather warnings.
The country recorded its hottest day ever on Wednesday, breaking the record set on Tuesday with an average of 30C.
Amid the heat, a French second-division footballer who played for Guingamp drowned.
Kenzo Kies, 21, was found in critical condition when he was pulled from the Rhone river on Monday, before succumbing to his injuries in hospital today.
Over the last 24 hours in Paris, at least 25 people have suffered from cardiac arrest.
Tourist attractions have been forced to shut, livestock have been dying in their hundreds and more than 8,000 schools have experienced disruptions.
The death toll across France has risen sharply as vulnerable people’s conditions are exacerbated by the exceptional heat.
Thunderstorms are also expected to hit 12 regions in France following the intense heat, with an orange alert issued for these areas along the west coast.
The majority of deaths across Europe have been recorded in Spain, where at least 212 people have died, according to local authorities.
French teaching unions have also called a strike, refusing to work amid the “unacceptable” temperatures.
Additionally, a British woman fell ill and died while staying at the Baie d’Aunis campsite with her husband in the coastal town of Tranche-sur-Mer.
She is understood to have died from a heart attack.
And a three-year-old child died after locking himself in an overheating car.
