Biotechnology company R3 BIO hope to produce non-sentient ‘bodyoids’ as an ethical alternative to animal testing, with one investor in the firm hoping that the tech could allow scientists to harvest lab-grown organs
Billionaires are pumping cash into a cutting-edge tech company that work in the production of genetically engineered monkey organs, with the hope that lab-grown human parts could be not far behind.
Boston-based biotechnology firm R3 BIO, work in the production of living organ systems that are grown artificially and not by supported by any sort of brain, developing these ‘bodyoids‘ as an alternative for animal testing.
Their work involves trying to produce things like lungs, kidneys and hearts from a few cells in a lab, and keeping them alive in order to perform experiments on them.
R3 BIO have received backing from several powerful investors in the sector of biotechnology, including American billionaire Tim Draper and Singaporean investment fund Immortal Dragons.
The CEO of Immortal Dragons told Wired magazine that they hoped R3 BIO would soon be able to produce human bodyoids too.
