The Greenland government wants the island’s defense to be under NATO auspices to counter a U.S. takeover. The government emphasizes that it will “under no circumstances” accept U.S. wishes.
The Greenlandic government Naalakkersuisut says it feels strong support from European NATO countries and wants to see the alliance take responsibility for the defense of the island.
“All NATO countries, including the USA, have a common interest in Greenland’s defense,” the government says, and wants to see a dialogue about and development of Greenland’s defense within NATO’s framework.
It further states that “the US has again reiterated its desire to take over Greenland. The government coalition cannot accept this under any circumstances.”
Last week, Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Poland and Spain jointly supported Denmark and Greenland and their right “to decide on matters concerning Denmark and Greenland”.
From the American side, the European statements have had no effect, reports DR. Republican U.S. House member Randy Fine has submitted a bill that would partly pave the way for American control over Greenland and could, if enacted, make the island the 51st state of the United States.
“I believe it is in the interest of the entire world that the United States gain control of Greenland,” he told Fox News, according to DR, claiming that the island is suffering because Denmark is “ruled by socialists.”
