Donald Trump is ready to impose “shock and awe” sanctions on Russian exports, just days after deploying two nuclear submarines. The US president has given Vladimir Putin a 10-day ultimatum to negotiate a resolution for the conflict in Ukraine or face severe restrictions on its oil exports.
Senator Jim Risch, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, hinted that Mr. Trump could enforce these penalties by August 8 – merely a week away. He told The Telegraph: “When and if secondary sanctions hit, it’s going to be shock and awe. Things are going to change dramatically.”
The latest round of sanctions was initially expected to include a 100% tariff on buyers of Russian oil, with India and China being the largest consumers.
A bill supported by the Republicans also suggested imposing 500% tariffs against Russia and its allies, which Mr. Trump later reduced to 100%. Further modifications to the penalties were seemingly announced by Mr. Trump on his platform, Truth Social, where he stated that India would be subjected to a 25% tariff.
He posted: “Remember, while India is our friend, we have, over the years, done relatively little business with them because their Tariffs are far too high, among the highest in the World, and they have the most strenuous and obnoxious non-monetary Trade Barriers of any Country.
“Also, they have always bought a vast majority of their military equipment from Russia, and are Russia‘s largest buyer of ENERGY, along with China, at a time when everyone wants Russia to STOP THE KILLING IN UKRAINE – ALL THINGS NOT GOOD!”
