Russian papers and military bloggers are discussing the prospect of Russia using nuclear weapons to strike Ukraine after Kyiv launched brutal strikes on Vladimir Putin‘s airbases. The country is reeling after Ukrainian drones are reported to have destroyed more than £5 billion worth of strategic bombers in what some pro-Kremlin commentators have described as Russia‘s “Pearl Harbour”.
The coordinated attacks that were over a year in the planning wiped out some 40 planes at air bases located as far away as the Arctic and Siberia. The attacks represent a stunning intelligence failure and have sparked a vicious backlash in the Kremlin, as a furious Putin is said to be looking to punish those responsible for the disaster.
Vladimir Osechkin, a renowned Kremlin critic with strong contacts inside Russia‘s security services, claimed the Russian President was on the war path.
Putin is reported to be holding meetings with the General Staff, FSB and FSO to determine which high ranking officers in the FSB’s Counterintelligence will walk the plank for the spectacular failure.
The list of the “guilty” will be drafted starting Monday, according to FSB informants.
Meanwhile, Sky News’ Moscow reporter Ivor Bennett says some sections of the media are openely discussing whether Putin should retaliate with a nuclear strike on Ukraine.
Some argue that the country’s updated nuclear doctrine allows for such a response because this was an attack on Russia‘s nuclear-capable bombers.
