Northeast and New England brace for the big freeze: Winter storm with driving rain and snow set to hit New York and nine other states:
A robust weather system is forecast to bring freezing rain, snow and flooding across the country – before briefly warming temperatures for 200 million Americans.
The wet weather has been drenching parts of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Arkansas, and combined with gusty winds could create hazardous conditions, according to AccuWeather.
A wintry mix that hit the Midwest on Tuesday is predicted to move through New England – and when combined with warm air and moisture could lead to freezing rain and snow.
Temperatures are forecast to warm up and thaw out parts of the country at the end of the week following the recent major snowfall.
However, this surge of warmth is expected to be short lived and a cold storm could bring snow to parts of the northeast.
Here is how the forecast breaks down across the country:
South
The National Weather Service forecasts heavy rain and risk of flash flooding for parts of the Lower Mississippi Valley, Tennessee Valley and Gulf states through Friday morning.
‘Rounds of heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected to continue across the southern tier of the country through the weekend,’ said AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Tyler Roys.
‘Thunderstorms from central Texas to coastal Alabama will be capable of producing damaging winds, hail and even a tornado or two.’
A low pressure system is predicted to move east through the Lower Mississippi Valley bringing rounds of convection across the south-central United States.

Heavy downpours are forecast for the Southern Plains, Gulf states, Mississippi/Tennessee Valleys and the Southeast due to moisture moving north from the Gulf of Mexico.
There is a moderate risk of excessive rainfall areas including eastern Texas, Louisiana and southern Mississippi through Thursday morning, according to the National Weather Service.
There is a slight risk of excessive rainfall for portions of the Gulf states and the Southeast Thursday and Friday.
Northeast
A swath of freezing rain and some accumulating snowfall is forecast for the Midwest, Lower Great Lakes and the Northeast on Wednesday.
The warm air moving north and eastward over the cold air pushing out could cause freezing rain in New England.
Later in the week least 200 million people across the Mississippi Valley to the Atlantic coast are expected to experience warmer temperatures, AccuWeather forecast.
