Musk’s Neuralink monkey plays video game in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy-like’ clip:

Elon Musk has been slammed after a clip of a Neuralink trial monkey playing a video game resurfaced on social media with some comparing the testing to that of The High Evolutionary in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

The footage, posted to YouTube, shows Pager the nine-year-old macaque controlling the game with his mind after receiving two controversial brain chips on each side of his cranium. As he gamed, the ape was rewarded with a banana smoothie that he slurped through a straw. “We can interact with the Neuralinks simply by pairing them to an iPhone, just as you might pair your phone to a Bluetooth speaker,” a voiceover explained. “The links record from more than 2,000 electrodes implanted in the regions of Pager’s motor cortex that coordinate hand and arm movements.”

But not everyone was happy with the technological advancements. Commenting on the video, which has been viewed 1.6m times to date, one wrote: “With this tech we can make monkey a human eh?” followed by a crying emoji.

Meanwhile another chimed in: “Why abuse these exotic monkeys for these devilish games! Poor Jane Goodall would turn around in her grave !!!”

A third added: “Have you all seen ‘Guardians of the Galaxy 3’? We can compare this monkey to ‘Rockett’, the raccoon and Elon Musk to the madman in the film who thought he was a god!”.

In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, the film shows the story of how Rocket was turned from a simple Racoon and other animals into a more human-like creature in the The High Evolutionary’s quest to make the perfect creature. The film also shows Rocket being given several tasks to do in order to show his new intelligence.

Not everyone was so disparaging, however. One user wrote: “I’ve never rooted so hard for any being playing Pong ever. He’s adorable.”

Meanwhile a fellow supporter agreed: “Man that’s some amazing technology. I can imagine someone being able to control all their home devices with just their mind.”

A lot has changed since the clip was first posted back in 2021. Musk launched six years of human tests of his “brain-computer interface” after getting the all-clear last year.

Musk claimed in November more than 5,000 people had put themselves forward to take part. But Neuralink came under fire last year after it was claimed as many as a dozen macaque monkeys suffered chronic infections, paralysis, brain swelling, and other horror side effects after receiving the chip, the Daily Star previously reported.
