Ominous warnings from Russia, missile strikes in the Middle East and uneasy diplomacy in China – the threat of World War Three has never loomed larger.

In a chilling speech on Monday, defence minister Grant Shapps declared that international relations have entered ‘a new era’.

‘We must be prepared to deter our enemies, prepared to lead our allies and prepared to defend our nation whenever the call comes,’ he said.

Shapps said Russia, China and Iran posed serious threats, calling them ‘unstable’ and ‘irrational’.

And it’s not the first time a UK politician has alluded to war in recent months.

Former defence secretary Ben Wallace said Britain would be ‘at war by 2030’ in an interview last year.

With Russia’s war in Ukraine no closer to an end, tensions rising in the Middle East and a new president putting the spotlight back on Taiwan, could the UK be drawn into conflict even sooner?
