At least 200 million people worldwide could be forced out of their coastal city homes after scientists revealed they are sinking by up to five centimeters per year.
Researchers at the University of Rhode Island analyzed 99 places, finding that most are sinking faster than sea levels are rising, but 34 locations are dropping by more than one centimeter per year.
The team uncovered four sinking ‘hot spot’ cities in Bangladesh, China, the Philippines and Pakistan, with yearly subsidence rates of up to five centimeters.
Also sinking at fast rates are the Tampa Bay Area, Florida; New Zealand‘s Auckland; Taipei in Taiwan; and Turkey’s capital, Istanbul- these cities are home to more than 22 million people.
