The annex of an 860-year-old Greek Orthodox Church was reduced to rubble
An Israeli airstrike Thursday night hit the annex of an 860-year-old Greek Orthodox church in Gaza City, killing 18 Christian Palestinians, local health officials and the church said. Dozens were reported injured.
Israel’s military said Friday it had targeted a Hamas command and control center nearby, and “a wall of a church in the area was damaged.”
Photos of the aftermath of the explosion at the Church of Saint Porphyrios showed much of the annex building was reduced to rubble.
The Greek Orthodox Patriarchy of Jerusalem condemned the attack and said it would “not abandon its religious and humanitarian duty” to help Gazans seeking shelter.
