Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on Thursday that Moscow has successfully tested a powerful new strategic missile, and has not ruled out the possibility of conducting nuclear weapons tests for the first time since the 1980s.
Putin’s first public statement about the test was that Moscow had tested its Burevestnik cruise missile, which is a powerful, nuclear-powered cruise missile with a range of thousands of miles.
He also said that Russia has almost finished building the Sarmat ICBM system, which is a key part of the country’s new nuclear arsenal. Putin has been making the point about Russia’s nuclear capabilities ever since he invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022. He said that no one would ever use nuclear weapons on Russia.
