Kevin McCarthy, the US Speaker of the House of Representatives, was ousted Tuesday in a dramatic showdown, the first of its kind in US history.
The vote of no confidence, which was triggered by a group of hard-line conservative members, left the House of Representatives and its Republican leadership in a state of chaos.
Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Florida), McCarthy’s top opponent, introduced the “motion to vacate,” which was backed by more than a dozen hard-line Republican opponents of the speaker and a bunch of Democrats who say he’s not up to the job.
