John Kirby, the spokesman for the US National Security Council, said Friday that all sides have agreed on a “basic framework” for a possible agreement to normalize relations with Saudi Arabia, but that no final deal has been reached yet.

He added that the US is still being careful about how to communicate the framework and what each side is expected to do. “Like any complex arrangement, this will inevitably be one of compromise,” he said, adding that a Saudi-Israel agreement would be good for both countries, as well as for US national security and the rest of the region.

He also said that several factors are driving the process, including the threats posed by Iran to both the US and Saudi Arabia.
